The Center for Species Survival Nigeria (CSSN) hosted a satellite event for the World Species Congress at the A.P. Leventis Ornithological Research Institute (APLORI) on May 15, 2024. This event provided an opportunity for the APLORI community to engage with the landmark global congress focused on species conservation.
Participants:
- Ten Master’s students in APLORI’s Conservation Biology program joined from APLORI discussion room.
- Twelve staff members and industrial trainees from the University of Jos joined from their offices.
Presentations:
- A live stream of the World Species Congress provided APLORI students with the opportunity to learn firsthand about critical species conservation issues and success stories.

- Bello Adamu Danmallam, Coordinating Species Survival Officer for CSSN, presented on “Bridging Gaps and Prioritizing Species Survival.”
- Bello highlighted APLORI’s role in bridging knowledge gaps in West Africa through its Master’s program and data collection efforts like the Nigerian Atlas Project.
- He also discussed how the newly established Center for Species Survival is prioritizing species survival by strengthening implementation of the Species Conservation Cycle (Assess-Plan-Act, Communicate, Network) in Nigeria and the subregion, aligning with the IUCN Species Strategic Plan 2021-2025.
“The event is evidence that there is hope. From brilliant organizations, to spectacular talks and panels, I have experienced a world that is ready to reverse and halt extinction,” said Nanchin Winifred, a Research Associate at APLORI.
